Understanding Social Security

September 03, 2025

Earlier this month, we had the privilege of hearing from Charo Boyd, Public Affairs Specialist with the Social Security Administration (SSA). With more than two decades of experience, Charo shared practical insights into retirement, spousal, and survivor benefits—and why planning ahead is critical for a secure retirement.

For compliance purposes we were not permitted to record the webinar. Please use the link below that takes you to the Retirement Benefits Brochure on the Social Security Administration website. This brochure outlines much of what Charo discussed in our webinar.

Staying Informed and Avoiding Scams

Social Security rules are evolving, and misinformation is common. Charo emphasized the importance of using SSA.gov as the most reliable source for updates and subscribing to SSA’s news or blog.

She also shared her framework for recognizing scams, the “Four Ps”:

Pretend – Scammers pose as trusted agencies
Problem – They create an urgent issue
Pressure – They push you to act quickly
Payment – They demand money or details for your bank account, credit card or digital payment
👉 If you suspect a scam, report it at oig.ssa.gov.

Below is an update from the Social Security Administration that provides information about Social Security taxes, benefits, and costs for 2025.
